Chemical Wild West

Who would like to meet a cowboy, who

  • shoots faster than his shadow?
  • makes beer out of nothing in the saloon?
  • is able to boil up water without the help of fire?

 DIALOGUE IN THE DARK®

The exhibition "Dialogue in the dark" was the most important event of the festival. You weren't able to see anything!!.....but you were able to touch, smell, hear and taste a lot... A most impressive exhibition!

Now you can visit Dialogue in the dark in Innsbruck or Milano. At the exhibition in Innsbruck let yourself be led through a mountain range in absolute darkness. We are certain that you have never experienced mountains with your senses in such an intensive way ! For people like us who depend a lot on our eyes, moving around in complete darkness is difficult, unnatural, maybe even scary. But you'll be surprised how many pictures will be there in your mind afterwards! Language: German, Italian and English.

Innsbruck: Wilhelm Greil Str. 23. Open from tuesday until sunday,  9.00 am until 6.00 pm.

Milano: Palazzo Reale. Open tuesday, wednesday, saturday, sunday, 9.30 am until 7.00 pm; thursday and friday, 9.30 am until 11.00 pm.

Attention: enrolment is necessary for this event! Enrolment in Innsbruck at e-mail: tickets@dialog-im-dunkeln, fax: +43 512 90809080, phon +43 512 908070. Enrolment in Milano at phon +39 0289015330.

Chemical Wild West

"Chemistry is, when it is crackling and stinking"

But that's not all, if you know Dr. Andreas Korn-Müller: there is not only a lot of smoke and many explosions, but there are also special effects with music and light, there are pantomime and cabaret.

36 year old "Magic Andy" wants to explain science in an entertaining and amusing way. Adults and kids can learn a lot about chemistry and physics laughing a lot and having fun in his experimental shows (link: http://www.sciencecomedy.com).

Science fiction
Peter Kolosimo – limits of scientific divulgence.

The European Academy Bolzano presented science cinema with the collaboration of UPAD (Public University Alps Dolomites). The science fiction nights were dedicated to the most famous Italian scientific writer and populist Peter Kolosimo who lived in Bolzano for four years. He was the outrider of scientific divulgence and became the knight of the pen in the sixties and seventies. Millions of readers all over the world have been immersed in the mysteries of the universe by reading his books since. His bestsellers are "Not of this world", "Timeless Earth", "Spaceships in Prehistory", etc.

This film serial faced contemporary themes and subjects like genetic engineering, and pointed out how important scientific awareness has to be. The author Giuseppe Mora presented the movies, and the scientists, like the physicist Marco Lovera, explained the subjects and themes of the movies from a researcher's point of view. Kolosimo's wife Caterina and their daughter Alessandra introduced the film "Odyssey 2001".

The movies

Plot: Enrico Fermi develops a new nuclear reaction in 1934, out of which shall be formed the atomic bomb one day. Only Fermi and one of his best students, Majorana, realize the heavy responsibility and the impending danger. Discussion: physicist Gian Marco Lovera talked about "Physics and its sins"

  •  "Odyssey 2001": Monday, 2002/09/30, at 8.30 pm in the EURAC building; duration: 139 min, Director: Stanley Kubrick; language: German. Plot: The director, a master of this genre, creates the perfect harmony between history and future, progress and superman, knowledge and mystery. It is a masterpiece of science fiction. Discussion: Caterina and Alessandra Kolosimo talked about "Peter Kolosimo, future man".

Physikalisches Kabarett (Cabaret of physics)

Do you dare to look at a twenty kilograms heavy concrete ball shot in your direction, and do you know what will happen to a human that has no air in his/her body? How can it be that a screwdriver can keep on standing alone in the air without support, and what will happen to a fakir on his bed, if someone threatens him with other nails? This and a lot more you experienced at the cabaret of physics presented by two lecturers of the Fribourg College of education. They showed us many "forbidden" experiments out of different physical sectors (things we weren't allowed to see at school!) and helped us to understand them without difficult formulas and derivations.

Serata spaziale (space night)

Lecture of the astronaut Umberto Guidoni

Once in space! This sounds like a utopia for most of us, but for Umberto Guidoni it is reality. He was born in Rome in 1954 and received his B.S. degree in Physics and Ph.D. in Astrophysics from University of Rome in 1978. In August 1998, Dr. Guidoni joined the Astronaut Corps of the European Space Agency (ESA) and was awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal in 1996. He is an astronaut and an excellent scientist, but also an ordinary family father who loves swimming, playing volleyball and listening to classic music. He was a mission specialist on STS-100, the 9th mission to the International Space Station (ISS) during which the crew successfully delivered and installed the Candarm2 Robotic Arm supplied by the Canadian Space Agency – and on this occasion, he brought Parmesan cheese and a CD of Vivaldi for his colleagues. He is a scientist with heart and humor. You had the chance to experience this extraordinary man at "explOra!". He told us about his adventures in space and his daily life.
Language: Italian

The lecture takes place at 8.30 pm in the Auditorium of the European Academy Bolzano, 1 Drusus Avenue the 2002/10/3.

Dr. Guidoni was also guest of the High school of commerce (Handelsoberschule) "Kunter" in Bolzano at 9.30 am, the 2002/10/04.

Kulinarische Physik (physics and cooking)

Why does an egg break and lots of other culinary secrets; by Werner Gruber

Did you know that cooking has nothing to do with art, but simply knowing physical and chemical rules? If a hog roast is crispy or a dumpling soft doesn't depend on the cook's ability, but on basic physical formulas. The physicist Werner Gruber explained in an easy way why physicists are much better cooks. He cooked a fantastic canard and a perfect mayonnaise in only a few minutes. "When we understand the science behind what we are doing in the kitchen, it will enable us to do it better!", said Werner Gruber. The presentation was in German.
